The Epic Funsunzi Beach Festival

Durban is most definitely the place to be during festive season. With warm weather and vibey atmosphere, its hartd not to love this city.
Maynards in association with Durban's number 1 radio station East Coast Radio have come up with a way to make this summer even more fun and juicy. They're doing this through one of the coolest beach festivals. The Funsunzi Beach Festival, this is just a way to make a juicy summer even juicer with the kaboom type of burst from the wide selection of Maynards and out of this world entertainment from some of the best radio DJs from East Coast Radio.

The Funsunzi Beach Festival began on the 19th in Margate then moved to Suncoast Beach on the 21st with breakfast show radio DJ Darren Maul. Today they've taken the kaboom juiceness to the last stop which is the Willard Beach in Ballito.
The festival is a perfect place for families to come have fun from splashes in Maynard pools, to all sorts of games burtsing with flavor.

If you're in Ballito its not too late to catch the Funsunzi Beach Festival, since tomorrow, the 24th of December Maynards and East Coast Radio will still be bringing you the juiciest summer fun.
If you thought this was gonna be a bland summer you just got a major kaboom burst of juicy Maynards all over your face. And there's more than just edible candy, there's a lot more eye candy.

Tea with Siya Ntini: Introductions x RALFE ATOX

Over the week I got to sit down and have a cup of wine  tea, with the talented, young man who's planning on taking the fashion industry by storm in South Africa. Here's my chat with Siya Ntini the brain and creative behind the brand RALFE ATOX

Q: At most I'm always doing the talking (which I do enjoy) but I would prefer that you tell us who is Siyabonga Ntini and what is he about?

Siyabonga Ntini is a weird looking boy, all about fashion, all about art and design. Passionate towards anything with a strong story line. I believe everything has a reason. There's a reason you have tucks on a dress. What is it?... I'm that type of person. Always have questions. On a more biographical manner I was born in JHB by my parents who are from DBN and you know how back then (20 years ago or so) everyone moved to JHB for a better life. I mean even now people still do. I chose to come back here because I believe I was born here by spirit and I'm all about DURBAN. I LOVE IT!!

Q: Today we're looking at introductions in all levels. Without any modesty can you introduce us to the fashion house Ralfe (ATOX)?

RALFE is my late father's name and in short the label is for women designed in an avant garde taste and aims at Ready To Wear. ATOX is a design chart I created for my self that acts as a secondary logo for anything I do. A is a triangle which could easily mean controversy. My design attitude is all about people reacting to the clothes emotionally. Either love or hate. It's emotional and personal to me and I want that to show. T is stylized as a crucifix which stands for Religion. I'm very pro-religion and you'll soon learn how I abuse that element of me in my design language. O is void of any references. Timeless, modern and now. X is the art element I always apply.
That mostly tells you about my label in short and many people might not pay attention to the ALF embedded in it but it plays a huge role and it's one of the things people will learn about pretty soon.

Q: I was lucky enough to be one of the people who were in attendance for your debut showcase. We saw that your collection had some of the most eclectic fabric pairing. What was the inspiration behind the whole collection?

Haha I like the part where everything sounds so exclusive. Yeah, uhm the collection is called Sublime Aftermath and I kinda shifted my mindset back to the tender age of six when I first learnt my dad had passed on. The first thing I was told by my mother was "Your father has been fetched by angels to go live in heaven..." that still stings even now but I just wanted to highlight the emotion I had then and what death meant to the six year old Siya and how I had the idea that he'd be dressed in white and bless me with wealth and he sacrificed himself to look after me in at a better place hence I used White, Gold and Red. We all want success. What's better than White and Gold? That's heaven right there. Carved and stitched on a woman. Wearing heaven should feel good. So that's where I saw it go.

Q: Still on introductions. Who is the Ralfe ATOX girl? What's her taste in fashion? What's her attitude like?

She's a mean girl. Chameleon, probably has split personalities and always has red lipstick on. In essence she's a rebelle stuck in a princess's body.

Q: Now we wouldn't really be done talking until we actually spill some tea. What is it that you believe South African fashion designers are doing wrong and is becoming an impede on their way to gaining international recognition?

Personally I think design and research go hand in hand. As much as following trends can make you look like everyone, starting and interpreting them in a personal level will always make you unique.designers tend to go crazy and forget that fashion is a calculated scientific industry. It is not always spontaneous. Think, design, re-create and brand yourself. Signature is also important and lastly perfect your craft. As beaux your stuff may be if it doesn't meet international standards then boooosh. There goes the life of London to New York.

Q: How do you plan to bring that sense of freshness, futuristic and currency with Ralfe ATOX?

With me future comes last in design. I'm all about now, past and emotion. Sometimes relevant clothing that hits someone's nerve either good, bad or uncomfortable makes the impression last longer. Fresh is dependant on trends and personal mind space. That's just me saying I'll depend on me and my art, and research. Everything follows.

Q: 2014 is literally on our doorsteps. What are some of your goals so far?

Let's say I have plans but I ain't sharing but I just wanna see my label grow into something people identify as beautiful and niche appropriate clothing. I don't plan on doing men's wear under RALFE but anything happens. All I say is pay attention to the ALF...
Sometimes dreams come true but most times we wake up only realizing you were dreaming all this time instead of doing. They say dreams do come true. Only if you wake up. Guess who's not sleeping 2014?... (sips tea)

Rihanna becomes the New face of Balmain

What happens when a French fashion house meets a Bajan beauty who's every designer's dream to work with? Add a major photography duo to that spin. You get all sorts of flames and fierceness! And that's exactly what happened when mega superstar Rihanna posed for Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin in a photo shoot styled by Mel Ottenberg for Balmain's Spring 14 ad campaign.

The What Now singer stars on Balmain's SS14 campaign which is set to appear in magazines in January 2014. The songstress who was honoured with first ever American Music Awards Icon award this year was yet again described as an 'icon' by the brand's creative director, Olivier Rusteing.

"When the woman that inspires you wears your creations, your vision feels complete." Rousteing said.
He was further quoted saying "In front of the camera, she makes you feel like she is the only girl in the world,"

Rihanna appears in two different looks for this campaign. One she's styled in denim with heavy gold chains for accessories. The second look is embraces her femininity in pink, its much softer also with gold accessories and gorgeous white lace high heels with metallic gold heels.
The singer's not new to modelling since she has also posed for a Chanel ad campaign and Armani jeans. It certainly shows with the way she's able to give out beauty even with half her hair across her face.
With her hairstyle and tattoos she's able to balance both the edginess and the chic.  It is an understatement to say she killed it!

Riccardo Tisci introduces campaign of color: Erykah Badu x Givenchy

Riccardo Tisci of French fashion house Givenchy continues to bring new spins into the fashion industry with the brand's latest Spring 14 ad campaign. Famous for always being a trailblazer Tisci chose to work with the royalty of Neo-soul Erykah Badu for the SS14 campaign.
Tisci who has worked with R&B superstar Beyoncé on her high grossing world tour, The Mrs Carter World Tour is known for his love for women of color. This campaign is no different as the woman of color is not only Badu but other models featured are women of color which comes as a breath of fresh air in the fashion industry which can at times seem one bit biased.

“What I want to do with my advertising campaign is spread the love. Already now it’s been three seasons that I’ve been using people that express something—they are great artists, or beautiful women, or stylish women, or models that I really believe in. It’s kind of a family portfolio.” Tisci said on a telephonic interview in Paris.

Social media went ablaze when the pictures photographed by the  genius duo Mert and Marcus with singing sensation and Puma creative director Solange Knowles taking to Twitter saying "Badu Kill Em for Givenchy. Just Yes"
We can't help but agree with everyone who's fond of this campaign I mean Badu's style has always evolved from great to greater. Its rather close to impossible not speak about the Bag Lady singer without mentioning the word "icon" from her unique fashion sense with those gravity defying head wraps to her forever poetic lyrics.
The collection which absorbs inspiration from Japanese & African cultures is just paired perfectly with Badu. I must this is just one of the best and unexpected SS14 ad campaigns we've seen so far.

Monochrome Days x Boys Through The Lens

Basically this is how wild fashionable boys roll when they're sent out in the city. These pictures were taken at Mxolisi Luke Mkhize's party which was both his birthday and the birthday of his label House of Saint Luke (HSL). The party was held at the warehouse kinda venue at Fuego. This party saw the launch of the fabSiya Ntini's first ever collection for his line named Ralph Tox (yes you are still to hear more about him and his line).

Here are just some of the pictures with your's truly all dressed in black, (and no! We did not plan the wide brimmed hats look) it was just as much of a surprise for each of us when we all bumped into each other. Trevor Ntombela of Rovertzn (in the glasses) opted for calling us the Jews for the night since we were already on our way there in all forms of fierce by the way.
These are just some of my favorite people in the fashion scene around DBN so in all honesty I totally didn't mind looking all so similar to them.

Versace Loves Gaga x Spring/Summer Campaign

A few weeks ago when Lady Gaga's latest album was leaked everyone got the taste of what was to be a rather bland offering from the Applause singer. With a few favorites from the fans in the lines of Gyspy, Venus and Do What U Want which features R&B legend R Kelly, it was hard to overlook Donatella. The track which is named after the creative dierctor of Versace just went to show how much Lady Gaga values her relationship with the brand.
Soon after the official release of the singer's long awaited album, it was officially announced that Gaga would be posing for Versace on their spring/summer 2014 campaign. I must say this may be one of the few good things that might have come out of Artpop which doesn't seem to be doing quite well on the charts plus the reviews haven't been close to great either.

Monday,my serving of whats hot online had to be the Versace Loves Gaga amongst her entrance at AMA's on a human horse in Versace, obviously. Lady Gaga channels the brand's creative director look on the campaign with long straightened blonde hair and minimum accessories. Personally I believe this campaign is enthralling in way, Mother Monster is known for her outrageous, avant-garde style as her everyday look but this campaign sees her in a very clean and elegant style. She looked super chic and uhm (healthy) on that tight bandage dress. This just goes to prove that sometimes less is more even for Mother Monster.

InstaFashion x Gert-Johan Coetzee Couture meets Kelly Rowland

There are moments which just evoke a sense of patriotism with everyone and international singing sensation Kelly Rowland brought just that to South African fashion lovers and followers of the brand Gert-Johan Coetzee Couture when she wore a super chic LBD to the Ms. Foundation for Women event, held in Beverly Hills on Tuesday night. Twitter and Instagram went crazy when Kelly Rowland posted a picture of herself in the garment on Instagram with the caption "My beautiful dress I wore last night to the Foundation for Women #GloriaSteinemEvent was by the South African designer @gertjohancoetzee AMAZING!"

Kelly Rowland looked impeccable in this killer LBD finished with a up hairdo and just the right amount of make up. She was stunning and that not just my verdict other international bloggers and fashion columnists praised the Kisses Down Low singer for this Coetzee number.
I personally believe she has just gone and showed us what a Gert-Johan girl looks like. Sophisticated, extremely elegant and super sexy. So if international superstars have recognize the genius which is Gert-Johan Coetzee what are you waiting for?

Into Vanity x Fur

Anyone who knows me personally would know how much of a vain creature I am. As much as I am a street fashion blogger but my love for high-end fashion is undeniable. It’s like how much Kanye loves fashion yet he’s a coveted rapper and at most you’d hardly expect a person in the hip hop game blatantly come out as a fashion fundi like he has. Most of us have had that moment when we see a superstar struts around in a music video in that oversized jacket looking all Cruella De’Ville vain in fur. Some have even gone to the lengths of trying it out ourselves. Well due to the fact that some of us cannot afford that designer label version of the jacket we then had to try out the next best option available which doesn’t seem like a bad idea when the holy creature is still styled to kill on a mannequin. Only when we’ve worn it once or twice and after a few visits to the laundry do we see it looking like an orphaned anorexic squirrel on a rainy day then we realize maybe this wasn’t such a great idea after all.

So where am I taking this exactly? Well in my time for self-torture which just so happen to give me joy I have been seeing hints of fur here and there. Earlier in the year Johannesburg based brand AMEN Couture unveiled it range of pure fur. From jackets to scarves and collars I found myself drooling (on both the clothes and the models hahaha). I’ve also seen a lot of my so ever fashioning girls with their clutches and handbags some with just trimmings of fur and others fully adorned with it. A few months back on one of my adventures in the city I also saw fashion-forward girls rocking chinchilla jackets which for some reason always makes me sing “Own it, but don't kill her! My jewellers are diamond rollers! My rock... chinchilla! Some more raw fun, I'm rolling like rock stars

Okay to face facts we all know we cannot be rocking fur vests or jackets in the summer heat of South Africa but I can promise to get myself one of these ‘self-love-creature items’ for next season. Note for anyone willing to join me on my Phresh off the Runway moments in fur just try not to wear both animal print and fur like you might as well go to the nearest zoo and get yourself a cage.

Hail The Cross Seasonal Beanie

For today's post I went into my archives and found some photos from a photo shoot I had a few months back with a dear mate of mine Thembi Mthembu of the Facebook page Lens Maniac. For this shoot well I didn't really go totally all out since I only pulled out a few items from my wardrobe basically my everyday look. Any one who knows me will know the love and pride i have for the 90's and more specifically the grunge era, after all I am a 90's babe.

Today I chose to focus not on the overall styling for the shoot but on the beanie. Well beanies have been trending like red velvet cup cakes this year from super model Cara Delevingne to the global pop singing sensation Rihanna who also loved this head gear so much as to make it part of her A/W collection for Rihanna for River Island.
I know some of you might be asking yourselves why am I busy talking about an item which is suitable for winter? Shoot me if you have to but I feel this trending item isn't about to go collect dust on our closets. Any day you can come up with a new excuse to rock your styling beanie. The one I'm rocking here is a black studded beanie lined with a piece of chiffon (for that prima-donna of the gutter feel) which I had made myself.

DUT Fashion Show 2013

The DUT Annual Fashion Show is an event created and hosted by the Fashion and Textiles Department from Durban University of Technology. This prestigious event is created as a stage where the 3rd year students from the Fashion and Textiles Department get to showcase their first collections before they graduate and have to face the fashion industry at it's raw form. Industry insiders and the who's who of fashion are all invited to this event.
The DUT Fashion Show always looks into showcasing the best talent this institution has groomed. 2013 was no different if not tons better. The show happened over a period of 3 days from the 2nd of October to the 4th (I don't know if the organizers wanted to be in time with the global fashion month as it was happening while Joburg was having SAFashionWeek? Well that's a subject for another day)

For designers who are just emerging and are still to be recognized the 3rd year students are required to put their best foot forward and my! did they deliver.
To avoid sounding bias in any way I must say some designers were rather too predictable by following some of the already overdone trends but obviously you'll always have one of those creative sparks who leave everyone at awe and one of those sparks was the AMAZING Nqobile Mdletshe with her Ndebele inspired collection which tells a story of metamorphism of a Ndebele girl. Mdletshe's collection captured what I call African Couture. She was one of the designers who's collection was out of the box yet so 'home made'. And seemingly I was not the only one who had recognized Mdletshe's high form of artistry as she won the very first ever "Judges' Recognition Award in the history of the event. The show has only five categories and Mdletshe's praise-worthy collection created the sixth category. Will she be the first and last designer to win this award only time will tell and the future designers.

Other collections that struck my eye were ones from Nicola Foaden who's collection was all monochrome black yet she played around with a lot of textures from luxe leather, fur, to velvets. Benazeer Mulla was also a major sport also sending down her menswear models in all black. Mulla's aesthetic seems to lie on symbolism of Egypt. She had played around with a lot of layers for her symbolic-sport chic collection. All this saw her taking away the award for Most Innovative Range, further proving street style to be bigger than some of us may think.
This year's DUT Fashion Show proved to be a must attend typa event.

Breakfast Affairs

Hangover from some mean place probably called Hell after hours at a shoot and some celebration the previous night. My friends Melo (who was debuting her new black and white Nike Air Max) and my ever so stylish sweety-pops Kanya reckon it's been a minute since we actually got together and had some healthy food without some booze (hahaha). So we got up and threw on whatever we could find on our wardrobes.

Melo dressed in a lovely floral dress, bowler hat, Nike Air Max and threw in a straw bag at it. I must say this was one of my favorite looks from this lovely lady, the most beautiful thing about her is that she always know how to choose clothes which work well with her silhouette and always dares to flirt with color.
Kanya is not your oh so typical type of fashion loving girl. She just knows how to #werkIt, a true fashion daredevil I tell you. Here she chose to dress up in her mini dungaree dress, grey crop top, snap back and a hot pair of gold trimmed shades.

Well I was minimal monochrome vibes, I opted for black skinny jeans, a white over sized tee, vintage shades and a vanity case just for control (hahaha). Like I had said this wasn't one of those premeditated fashion moments just minimalist hangover styling. Who knew breakfast could be so fashionable?

Hey don't forget to drop a comment, I love hearing from you guys. Tell me what accessories you mad for this Spring/Summer '13 season? Also follow me on Instagram and Twitter: @KingElihleLee

Tweeps x Soweto Pride

"Don't lose who you are in the blur of the stars!
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It's okay not to be okay...
Sometimes it's hard to follow your heart.
                      Tears don't mean you're losing..."

This past Saturday was the highly anticipated Soweto Pride. The Pride is a parade for people of the LGBTI community, where everyone celebrates their sexuality and also commemorates the memories of those who have lost their lives simply because they were brave enough to be true to who they were and have been fighting for the rights of equality. To celebrate this the LGBTI community comes out at it majority to be together and be jolly.
If one has attended an event of this nature one would know that FASHION is the forefront of everything. After all gay men have been said to be the most stylish breed. How true is this? Well let's say you can always watch, learn and make your own verdict.

Here we see a dear mate of mine who goes by the name Tino Mathej. Personally I had a moment of feeling that this guy's style is a stab to my existence. I vividly remember the day he came to me so excited in August telling me what he plans to wear and I approved but little did I know how on point his execution will be. Here he's posing with a mate of his Vincent in a denim dungaree.

Then we have the outspoken Tshidi. A young man who asks for no permission to voice out his thoughts and might I add he's thoughts are sometimes not so popular but that doesn't faze him one bit. Here he's with a stylish lad named Shana Nkosi. They're both in time with one of this season's trend; rocking stripes of different dimensions. Its monochrome galore.
Well here you have it ladies and gentlemen my super rad tweeps at the Soweto Pride.
          "Rejoice and love yourself today
'cause baby you were born this way"

Tempracha x Street Fashion Basics

At most street fashion is about individuals making their mark on the streets. Its may have inspirations from a lot of eclectic aspects; be it an era of the past or that is to come, people, culture, and nature. In the past years till recent times when we head off to the big runways you'd find major labels sending collections with hints and bits of street style but its very rare to find a label which looks into dedicating itself to street fashion. UMlazi's very own Sanele Cele has chosen to be one of those few brands that serve for that purpose, lets hear what he had to say when we had a chat with him about everything fashion and of course Tempracha.

1. Why "Tempracha"? And how did the name come up?
" A lot of people have defined what appeals to their fashion personae and what influences their style and they always base it on they feelings and surroundings and forget the most important one ,the "temperature" it defines your weather ,changes the textures of your clothes and how short or long will you rock it, so we're that element sets what you will wear."

> 2. When did you start envisioning yourself as a fashion designer? Was it something that happened at young stage or it came spontaneously?
Came at a young age use to love sketching a lot,and my mom's love for fashion and selling clothes, had a hand in me drawing cartoons who had highly detailed clothing,so all those elements had a hand in me creating who I am today .

> 3. So what's has been Tempracha's highlights so far?
styling a sport Mathambo video in 2012 ,working with New balance as an ambassador and working Okmalumkoolkat ,and working with KingADZ a London based writer ,strategist, videographer, and having him as a mentor is a blessing man. There is a lot to count ,but to me all has been my highlight .

> 4. Who's your favorite designer locally and internationally?
David Tlale and internationally Jeff Staple

> 5. Your views on South Africa's Street fashion?
There are a couple of brands I respect ,but the rest is just exaggerate ,I've lost a lot of love for South African street fashion and they lack of respect for fashion.

> 6. What's in store for fashionistas from Tempracha 2014?
1st and foremost good clothes, and to those who respect and love the brand they can expect immense growth and us crossing borders still paying attention to little details and quality.

Here you have it boys and girls Sanele Cele of Tempracha has spoken. Looks like 2014 is already gonna becoming an interesting and mind you its only October.
Drop a comment tell us what's your favorite local brand and anything about this interview.

The Heritage of Fashion: Alles Vintage Shop x The Thrift Collection

In light of the heritage week I thought I should share about the new collaboration of two vintage shops that took place last weekend. Alles Vintage and Second Hand Shop, is a shop established in 2013 owned by the ever so beautiful Ms Caron who collects vintage items from furniture, house decor to clothes and bags. Caron has items aging all the back to the 60s with some of the items which are hardly used in this age but come as elegant antique items in one's house. I now present to you the young and stylish Ms. Emily Eales who's the founder of The Thrift Collection. Emily has had her shop for nearly two years now, yet it had been online based for all that time with the exception of the days when she sells at the iHeart Market (which I have spoke about before). Emily says "The Thrift Collection is a thrifted and vintage clothing store which is known for quality clothing and affordable prices."

On Saturday the 21st of September both these two shops hosted us for the opening as a collaboration. And God was the clothing breathtaking, I myself as a self-confessed accessory head I was humbled by the beautiful accessories I saw there. The people were buying in bucket loads (Yass that's how affordable things are there). Literally every 15 minutes someone casually walked in with no intention to buy anything but walked out asking for assistance with holding the amount of items they had bought.

So boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen anytime you want any item priced so reasonably that you can buy tons of it Alles x The Thrift Collection is your place.

You can find these ladies in Glenwood, on 67 Davenport Road in Durban. You can also call them at 031 201 6855. Emily: 083 277 9749, Twitter : @TheThriftCo
